Destined to cross paths as young artists from the Nordic region, Edvard Munch and Akseli Gallen-Kallela were both propelled in their youth by a dream to change the art world, when the idea of becoming an artist was largely shunned by society. The ambitious duo achieved the improbable, when they altered the course of modernist painting following their meeting and eventual collaborative 1895 exhibition held in Berlin.

Peggy Pierce Elfvin Director Janne Sirén will deliver this talk centering Gallen-Kallela’s and Munch’s personal histories, while exploring the differences and similarities in their artistic practices. What motivated and inspired them? How did their art change the world and our perception of it? And what can we learn about the transformative power of art through their works? This talk is the first in a two-part series dedicated to the exhibition Northern Lights, on view on Floor 3 of the Jeffrey E. Gundlach Building through Monday, January 12, 2026. Learn More
